Anneke van Giersbergen

Anneke van Giersbergen is an amazingly successful musician (a Dutch singer, songwriter, guitarist and pianist). Anneke has demonstrated her vocal range and talent with some many bands, including her own bands and solo projects.

She has performed with a number of acts, including but no limited to; The Gathering, Agua de Annique, Devin Townsend Project, Anathema, The Human Experimente, Within Temptation, Ayreon, Moonspell, Yoav Goren, Novembers Doom.

She has recently had two successful solo albums; Everything is Changing & Drive and nowadays has formed a progressive heavy metal act called VUUR.

Personally, I've loved all the music Anneke has put out. Starting with transformation of The Gathering from the heavier sounds (Mandolin) into the more melodic tunes from (How to Measure a Planet and If, Then, Else) ending up with more alternative music (Souvenir and Home).

Anneke opened my ears to more mainstream sounds and with her vocals I could tap my foot and occasionally sing (poorly I might add) to the non-metal tunage I was used too. Anneke van Giersbergens is with out doubt, my favourite vocalist.

Melissa Rosenberg (aka Melrose)

I've become an instant fan of Melissa "MelRose" Rosenberg's music since first hearing her doing guest vocals with a metal band called Mechina. This led me to her own personal recordings as a solo artist with her debut "Hypnotized" EP and single called "Wasted on You". (Buy here now!)

MelRose has such an amazing voice which compliments both the light and the heavier sounds in her music and associated acts. It's works perfectly while being is unique and fresh.

Melissa is featured in a couple of bands as guest vocals, as I mentioned in an act called Mechina (an industrial death metal band) with such songs as The Horizon Effect and Cryoshock off their 2015 album "Progenitor" (Check it out!).

She also returned in their 2017 release "As Embers Turned to Dust". Perhaps Mechina is a bit heavy for you but make sure you check out her solo stuff though; totally addictive.

Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - Jpop Extraordinare

If you haven't heard about KYARY PAMYU PAMYU, the Japanese sensation, I recommend you take a listen to her blend of weird videos with light hearted catchy songs.  Most of the lyrics are in Japanese with a splash of sing-a-long English and the music clips are varied but always eccentric.

Kyary is well known for her 2011 single, "PonPonPon"; a viral video with tens of millions of views and has been dubbed "Harajuku Pop Princess".

She has provided me a new taste in Japanese Pop, a surprising avenue for my music interests which are usually center around metal music. There is something very enjoyable about JPOP (Japanese Popular Music) that I can't seem to find in Western Pop Culture.

In any case, join me in enjoying a new blend of talent, with a massively successful young woman that brings out my inner child and his cool dance moves.

Kontrust - Austrian Fun

KONTRUST is a magnificent band - a cross over between metal and rock with folk and funky feels. It's hard to pigeon hole their sound though, personally I think it's awesome.

Hailing out of Austria, this award winning band has gone from strength to strength each album release. My personal favourite - their latest installment is the diverse Explositive. Their videos and fun and colorful as they enjoy showing off the sexy and stylish lederhosen!

Click below to sample their sounds, see if you like it as much as I do and then head over to iTunes, Google Play and Spotify to buy their tun-age.

Pogo - A Perth Pioneer

POGO is an electronic music artist from Perth, Western Australia. He has a talent of recording small sounds, quotes, and melodies from a various films, television shows and you tube soundbites.

He has a big showcase of his clever creations and it's worth noting he doesn't use a bunch of vocal effects, instead snipping parts of audio to make a harmony for the vocal tracks. I have to admit I find his work to be infectious, friendly and fun to tune out too.

Pogo is quite the video creator without impeccable timing that suits his musical tunes. He has done many tours around the world, released five albums, eight extended plays (EPs) and 65 videos!

Below are my four favourites of his collection; but I do encourage all viewers to check out his entire catalog. And be sure to grab a purchase on his Spotify and iTunes shop!

Bad Sign - English Hard Rock

BAD SIGN is an three piece outfit hailing from Croydon, United Kingdom. Frankly, I just love these guys. Great sound, emotive lyrics...and a unique hard rock sound that is just infectious. Would like to see these guys live; hopefully they get big enough on the music scene to travel to wee ol' Perth, Western Australia!

They currently have a EP out called "Destroy" and a number of newly released singles that you can buy from iTunes, Spotify and even Google Play. My personal favourite is the epic moshin' tune Rebuild...that riff is sooooo good :)

Below is a number of Bad Sign's videos to wet your appetite - I'm sure you will not be disappointed. These guys are my new number one for 2016. Get it into ya!
